We flew to Newark where our prearranged transfer was waiting to take us to our hotel, The Knickerbocker on 42nd Street.
There's nowhere quite like Times Square and the Chrysler building
Once we had settled in, we went for a drink at the rooftop bar of the hotel. It was little chilly.
Gin and Tonic, of course ! Looks as though we have the place to ourselves, but it filled up quickly.
That evening we went to Grand Central Station for dinner, to a classic restaurant, The Grand Central Oyster Bar. First, we admired the great hall of the station.
Grand Central, opened in 1913 and was saved from the wrecking ball in the 1970's by Jackie Kennedy and others. Some 67 million passengers pass through the station every year.
The Oyster Bar is located on the lower level and is accessed via stairs and tunnels.
The Oyster Bar entrance
The main dining room is very impressive and very noisy
We ate in the more private dining room at the back, which was a little less noisy
Next day, we started our day at the newly reopened Frick Museum. They don't allow pictures of the art, but I sneaked a couple.
A nice Renoir
The Inner courtyard, originally open to the sky
After The Frick we walked into Central Park and headed for The Tavern on the Green for a leisurely lunch.
The Tavern on the Green
We relaxed back at the hotel in the afternoon (nap time!) before heading out in the evening to see "Moulin Rouge"
The interior of the theatre was imprssive, if a little crowded and not enough toilets !
The walls were lined with drawings (caricatures really) by Al Hirschfield.
Even before the show started, the set was spectacular. The rest of the show was also fantastic! One of the best we have seen.
The next day was Paul's birthday and Kris gave him the sweetest, most loving birthday card imaginable.
How sweet !
Our next stop was the New York Public Library, which was just down the road.
The famous exterior with the two lions (think "Ghostbusters" ) is very impressive, as is the interior.
The reading room
As is the ceiling
But the real reason we went to the library was to see Pooh Bear and his friends, given to the library by the publisher of the Pooh books, who was given them by the original Christopher Robin
Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet and Roo
Pooh Bear himself, looking a little worse for wear, but he is over 100 years old, so perhaps it's understandable.
In the evening, we went back to Bryant Park, just up the road from the hotel, for dinner. It was a lovely evening
In the Bryant Park Grill
Steak au poivre with French fries and an onion ring. Too much, really.
Then onto the main event - the real reason for the trip. Dua Lipa at Madison Square Garden. Hard to get pictures without a better camera, but this gives you an idea.
A wonderful, high energy show, which we really enjoyed. And we didn't feel out of place ! (Well, maybe a little)
And that was the end of our first trip to New York in 2025. Next day - back to Orlando
